Did You Know that the Japanese Angelshark (Squatina japonica)….
.….is the largest species of angelshark (reaching over 2 meters) from the Squatinidae family and is found in the northwestern Pacific Ocean off Japan, Korea, and China? It is a close relative to both the Taiwanese and Indonesian Angelshark. Their flattened bodies and broad pectoral and pelvic fins also make them similar in appearance to rays.
.….is an ambush predator? They hide motionless on the sandy habitats of ocean floors and wait to strike when prey comes within range. Their diet consists of fish, crustaceans, and cephalopods like squid.
.….has traditionally been hunted for food but has also been hunted for its skin, which can be made into a kind of leather called Shagreen? The sandpaper-like sharkskin has been used for polishing wood as well as for covering the hilt of a sword.
