Did You Know that some Sharks can Walk….

.….by using their pectoral and pelvic fins to move across the ocean floor and shallow coral reefs? These “walking sharks” are of the Hemiscyllium genus of sharks in the Hemiscylliidae family, which includes nine species of Epaulette Sharks and Carpetsharks that live in coastal waters around Australia, New Guinea, and Indonesia.

These sharks are perfectly capable swimmers, but can also “walk” between coral heads at low tide, along the seafloor, and even on land when needed. They also have the ability to survive for extended periods of time with little to no oxygen.

The nine recognized species in this genus include:

  • Epaulette Shark

  • Halmahera Epaulette Shark

  • Henry's Epaulette Shark

  • Hooded Carpetshark

  • Indonesian Speckled Carpetshark

  • Milne Bay Epaulette Shark

  • Papuan Epaulette Shark
