Shark Trivia

Did You Know that Sharks are Pregnant for a Long Time….

.….and can take years to gestate before giving birth to shark pups? Unlike most fish, sharks produce a small number of well-developed young as opposed to a large number of poorly developed young.

The length of pregnancy can vary significantly by species. For example, female Spiny Dogfish Sharks have one of the longest confirmed pregnancies of any vertebrate with up to two years. Some scientists estimate that the gestation of Basking Sharks lasts up to 3.5 years and Frilled Sharks for more than 3 years. However, some smaller species are just the opposite like Bonnethead Sharks who give birth after only about 5 months.
