Shark Trivia

Did You Know that Pregnant Female Sharks….

.….fertilize eggs in their oviduct, or womb and depending on the species, may reproduce by 1) Oviparous reproduction, 2) Viviparous reproduction, or 3) Ovoviviparous reproduction?

.….have gestation periods from about 5 to 6 months to 2 years? The spiny dogfish shark has the longest gestation period of all sharks and all vertebrates at 24 months.

.….swim away from their young after laying eggs or giving birth to live shark pups? The pups go on immediately to fend for themselves.

Tiger Sharks have babies that hatch from eggs that develop inside of the mother’s body, a process known as ovoviviparity. Pregnant Tigers do not have placentas but instead produce uterine milk to nourish growing pups. The gestation period for mothers lasts up to 16 months and they generally deliver between 10 to 80 pups.
