Did You Know that the Frilled Shark (Chlamydoselachus anguineus)….
.….gets its name from the frilled appearance on its six pairs of gills near the shark’s throat? It is shaped more like an eel than a typical shark with only one dorsal fin towards the back. They measure about 2 meters in length and are often confused with eels and sea snakes. Their wide mouths have 300 curved and needle-like teeth, each with 3 sharp points on each tooth, spanning across 25 rows.
.….has roots dating back 80 million years with its closest relatives being long extinct? Even today, little is known about the frilled shark and they are rarely seen in their natural environment.
.….includes two species, the Frilled Shark (Chlamydoselachus anguineus) and the Southern African frilled shark (Chlamydoselachus africana), which are usually located near the ocean floors of the waters of the outer continental shelf and the upper continental slope?
